After raising nearly $300,000 for children’s charities with its two previous charity vehicle builds, WD-40 Company is partnering with legendary hot rod designer and TV star Chip Foose to design and manage the build of this year’s WD-40®/SEMA Cares project vehicle.
The vehicle, which will be unveiled at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas Nov. 1-4, will appear at select West Coast auto-related events and then be auctioned off at the Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Show and Auction Jan. 21 in Scottsdale, Ariz. Proceeds of the sale of the vehicle will go to Childhelp® and The Victory Junction Gang® Camps children’s charities.
“You’ve seen the Camaro and the Mustang with those beautiful WD-40 brand colors, and this year we’re going to build something that will turn even more heads,” Foose said. “I can’t wait to build it, drive it and then auction it off for a great cause at Barrett-Jackson.”
This is the third consecutive year WD-40 Company has partnered with SEMA Cares, the charity arm of the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), to build a custom vehicle for charity. In 2009, the WD-40/SEMA Cares Camaro raised $75,000 for Childhelp® and the Victory Junction Gang® Camps, and last year the WD-40/SEMA Cares Mustang raised more than $200,000 for those same charities. Foose is partnering with a number of aftermarket automotive and technology companies, which will donate parts, equipment and services, to give the vehicle exceptional performance and a distinctive Foose design.
“We really want to build off of the success of the last two years, and partnering with someone like Chip, who’s the best in the business and has used our product all his life, was a great way to do that,“ said Tim Lesmeister, vice president of marketing at WD-40 Company. “We hope this year’s vehicle honors automotive professionals and enthusiasts who use WD-40 Multi-Use Product to get the job done.”
Limited edition 8- and 12-ounce WD-40 Smart Straw® cans that feature Chip Foose vehicle designs will also be introduced in November. The Foose collectible cans, available at select retailers nationwide, will each include a classic Foose design on the front. Designs include a 1956 Ford F-100, 1967 Chevrolet Camaro, 1956 Chevrolet Nomad, and a 2009 Chevrolet Camaro.

Chevrolet announced today the brand’s most-powerful convertible ever – the 2013 Camaro ZL1 – will debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show next month. When it goes on sale in late 2012, it will deliver more performance and technology than many exotic cars and ultra-luxury convertibles.
“The Camaro ZL1 convertible will be one of the most powerful and most capable, convertibles available at any price,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “This is a car that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face every time you drop the top – or hit the gas.”
Like the coupe, the Camaro ZL1 convertible features a supercharged 6.2L “LSA” engine, SAE-rated at 580 horsepower (432 kW) and 556 lb.-ft. of torque (754 Nm). That’s enough to exceed the output of 2+2 convertibles of many performance icons, including:
2012 Aston Martin DB9 Volante – 470 hp / 443 lb.-ft.
2012 Mercedes SL63 AMG – 518 hp / 465 lb.-ft.
2011 Porsche 911 Turbo S – 530 hp / 516 lb.-ft.
2011 Ford Shelby GT500 – 550 hp / 510 lb.-ft.
The Camaro ZL1 convertible’s power is complemented by advanced powertrain and chassis technologies designed to deliver exceptional performance on the road or track. In fact, it’s the same balance of acceleration, handling and ride quality that enabled a Camaro ZL1 coupe recently to lap the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife course in 7:41.27 minutes.
From Day One, the architecture for the fifth-generation Camaro was designed to accommodate a convertible model, which gives the ZL1 convertible coupe-like driving dynamics. Four strategic reinforcements enhance the already-stiff body structure to quell the cowl and steering wheel shake common in convertibles. They include:
A tower-to-tower brace under the hood
A transmission support reinforcement brace
Underbody tunnel brace
Front “X” brace and stiffer cradle as well as rear underbody “V” braces.
Additional structural reinforcements in the ZL1 convertible are designed to improve noise and vibration characteristics, while also reducing unwanted ride and body motions. They include a hydroformed tube in the A-pillars, an inner reinforcement bracket in the windshield header, a reinforced front hinge pillar and reinforcements inside the rockers.
The suspension of the ZL1 convertible uses the third-generation of Magnetic Ride. New, twin-wire/dual-coil dampers at all four corners enable faster response, with damping levels now adjusted up to 1,000 times per second – about one adjustment per inch of vehicle travel at 60 mph – making the system exceptionally responsive to changing driving and road conditions.
The Camaro ZL1 convertible will also offer Performance Traction Management as standard equipment, which is exclusive to General Motors. First introduced on the Corvette ZR1, it is an advanced system that integrates magnetic ride control, launch control, traction control and electronic stability control, to enhance both launch-acceleration performance and corning.
The result is a convertible designed to preserve nearly all the acceleration, road-holding and performance capabilities of the Camaro ZL1 coupe, which goes on sale in early 2012.

The world’s oldest running motor car, a historic 1884 De Dion Bouton et Trepardoux Dos-a-Dos Steam Runabout, entered the history books tonight, selling for an impressive $4.62 million before a packed house at RM Auctions’ Hershey, Pennsylvania sale. The impressive sale price more than doubled its original pre-sale estimate and represents a new world record for an early motor car sold at auction.
Commissioned by French entrepreneur, Count de Dion and named ‘La Marquise’ after his mother, the 127 year old vehicle drew a standing ovation from the audience as it drove onto RM’s Hershey auction stage. Attracting a starting bid of $500,000 and immediately jumping to $1,000,000, bidding moved swiftly to applause from the crowd, with the gavel eventually falling at an extraordinary $4,200,000. The final sales price of $4,620,000 includes 10% buyers’ premium.
“We were honored to have been entrusted with the sale of this most important motor car from the renowned collection of the late Mr. John O’Quinn. The world’s leading automotive collectors recognized the incredibly rare opportunity the sale represented, as was reflected in the spirited bidding and impressive result,” said Rob Myers, Chairman & Founder, RM Auctions following the sale.
The new owner joins an elite list of just five collectors to have claimed ownership of La Marquise over its well-documented history. In addition to being the world’s oldest running motor car, La Marquise’s impressive provenance includes participation in the first automobile race in 1887, where it reached a top speed of 37 mph on the straights, along with a double award at the famed 1997 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. In addition, La Marquise has also successfully completed four London to Brighton runs in the UK.

The Cruisin’ Couples Classic Car Club and Eustis Parks and Recreation Department present the Advance Auto Parts Car Show and Concert with proceeds benefiting the Wounded Warriors and Adopted Families with Kids. Hundreds of vehicles from classic car clubs across the state of Florida displayed their automobiles with Lakeside Ferran Park as the backdrop. Incredible show cars, a free concert, and a tribute to veterans made this show one of Tail Fins and Chrome’s favorite events of 2011.
A Friday night cruise into the nearby Holiday Inn Express kicked off with Dinner at JJ Fins Restaurant, 2 Elvis tribute artists and a ride in one of the most decked out Amphicars we’ve seen to date!
Saturday was filled with classic car enthusiasts sharing their stories of the hobby, a memorable fly over by military veterans in WWII planes, and some delicious food. Jake enjoyed the best root beer float he’s ever had and interviewed some classic car owners with some pretty amazing stories.
All in all it was a beautiful day in a quaint little town in central Florida filled with people who love the classic car collecting hobby. Special thanks to Kent
Thall from Crusin’ Couples for the hospitality and to Todd Fambrough, USMC Desert Storm Vet, who gave our crew the incredible aerial view.
Stay tuned for video clips from the event.
